In 2023, we inaugurated Art Jam Science Park to introduce art into Singapore Science Park (SSP) and inspire the community to come together with the common goal of empowering Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
In its debut, 40 park benches were painted by volunteers from our SSP community in collaboration with 45 PWDs and displayed across the park. The completed benches provided both form and function in support of many other SSP activations, allowing us to celebrate the partnership between community and art all year round.
This year, as we expand on our dedication to the cause, we’ll be adding music to the mix! Think sustainably-sourced, refurbished pianos painted with tenant-commissioned artwork peppered around SSP—a sort of interactive public art exhibition where all are welcome to tinker around. We’ve seen how the power of music brings people together, and we’re excited to share the gifts of both visual and performing arts with you.

In a show of support for inclusivity, SSP widens accessibility to the arts by partnering once again with ART:DIS, a non-profit organisation committed to fostering opportunities in the arts for PWDs. For over 30 years, ART:DIS has supported the community by providing them with platforms to express themselves confidently and to pursue their dreams, and this collaboration is no different.
This time round, we’re also partnering with Play It Forward, an outfit devoted to refurbishing old pianos and making them available in public spaces. Founded by three passionate pianists, the trio aims to encourage other like-minded individuals to spread joy through the simple act of sitting at a piano and playing a tune—no matter how seasoned or inexperienced you might be with the instrument.
Who says SSP is purely about science and tech? Last year’s Art Jam Fiesta saw tenants coming together for a night of food, crafts, and live music performances in celebration of the arts at SSP.
More than just a space for companies to build their businesses, SSP is also a place for the community to gather and form connections, and we’ve chosen the arts as just one of the many mediums to do so. So don’t be afraid to unleash your creativity. Who knows, you might just make some new friends along the way.
Apart from the camaraderie, this project also opens up fair opportunities for creative work for PWDs. Corporations will be allowed to adopt a piano and commission artwork from artists within ART:DIS, with all proceeds going wholly towards the PWDs.
The final objective of this initiative revolves around sustainability. By working together with the folks from Play It Forward, we’re breathing new life into these forgotten pianos, while forging onwards on our path to reduce waste and lower our carbon footprint.
We couldn’t let the hard work of our partners and volunteers go to waste—our completed benches were rotated and displayed at different spots within SSP through the year, for tenants’ and the general public’s use.
